Short History of K-electric Company.

The British Government created Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) in 1913, under the Indian Companies Act 1882.

After independence in 1947, Karachi city very drastically expanded with respect to area and population. The infrastructure of KESC was not in a position to handle a sudden increase in electricity demand. Therefore, in 1952, the Government of Pakistan nationalized it and took control to inject a large investment into it.

The government of Pakistan constructed eight (8)  new electricity-generating plants having a total capacity of 513 MV in the period from 1953 to 1980.

In 2005, the Government of Pakistan privatized it. The government retained 26% shares and transferred the remaining to a foreign consortium, so new owners invest in its infrastructure to improve its efficiency and electricity generating capacity.

In 2009, Abraaj Capital led by Arif Naqvi as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) took control of KESC.

In 1914, the KESC name was changed to K-electric. A new logo consisting of three feathers of orange, blue, and green colours, was also launched.

As of 2019, the Government of Pakistan owned 24.4% and the Abraaj Group and Aljomaih/NIG have 66.4% shares in K-electric.
