Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir as the 17th Army Chief of Pakistan and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Saff.

According to media reports, President Dr Arif Alvi has signed the advice sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for the appointment of the Army Chief and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in the Pakistan Army.
Gazette Notification
The federal government issued a gazette notification for the promotion of Lt General Syed Asim Munir and Lt. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza to the rank of General.
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza’s appointment as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be effective from 27 November 2022 for three years. According to the notification, the promotion of Syed Asim Munir to the rank of General and appointment as Chief of Army Staff will be effective from 29 November 2022 for three years. General Syed Asim Munir will assume command as the 17th Army Chief on 29 November 2022.
President Dr Arif Alvi approved the appointments on the summary of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The new Army Chief and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee also held separate meetings with President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to the notifications, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa will retire on November 29 and Chairman Joint Chiefs General Nadeem Raza will retire on November 27.

Islamabad: The government has sent the summary of the appointment of General Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army to President Arif Alvi. After the approval of the President, General Asim Munir will be confirmed as the Army Chief of Pakistan. It is noteworthy here that he is the most senior in the list of six (6) names.
The Federal Government has retained General Syed Asim Munir. Under the Army Act, an officer can be retained. According to the sources, this work has been done as a safety wall, so that there is no legal loophole. According to the reports, Lieutenant General Asim Munir was not allowed to retire by the Ministry of Defense.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif read out the summary of retention to the Cabinet as per the rules. The Federal Cabinet unanimously approved the retention of Lt. Gen. Asim Munir. As per the law, Major and above ranks take permission from the Ministry of Defense for retirement.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah says that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent advice to President Arif Alvi to appoint Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir as Army Chief of Pakistan and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Saff. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took the decision on important appointments by taking the cabinet into confidence.
President Arif Alvi has reached Chairman PTI Imran Khan’s house in Zaman Park Lahore for consultation on the appointment of the new Army Chief, The consultation was held between two on the summary sent by the Prime Minister.
Fawad Chaudhry, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), says that the move taken by the President was taken with the full support of Imran Khan. He said that the new leadership of the army is expected to play a positive role in democracy in the country. He congratulated the new Army Chief and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM) said that they congratulate the Prime Minister and all political parties on the election of the new military leadership. MQM Pakistan says that in the current political and economic crisis, the appointment is due to understanding. MQM Pakistan added that the new Army Chief will take steps to further improve the stability of the borders.
Senior journalist Hamid Mir says there was a big jubilation in India when Syed Asim Munir was removed as DG ISI in 2018. India blamed the newly appointed army chief for the Pulwama attack and it was planned by the then DG ISI Asim Munir.

General Asim Munir
General Asim Munir is not a graduate of the Pakistan Military Academy i.e. PMA. He was commissioned in the Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army through the Officers Training School Program at Mangala. He commanded the Northern Areas Force as a Brigadier under the then Commander Ten Corps General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
- Lt Gen Asim Munir worked as DG of Military Intelligence (MI) in early 2017.
- General Asim Munir was awarded the “Tamga Baqqa” in 1998 for his services in keeping Pakistan’s nuclear program safe, apart from his outstanding service in Siachen in 2002 when tensions with India flared up. He has also been given “Independence Medal”.
- Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir was also Corps Commander Gujranwala for 2 years while currently posted as Quartermaster General in GHQ, Rawalpindi.
- Lt Gen Asim Munir will be the first Army Chief who has served in both Military Intelligence (MI) and ISI.
- He has commanded a division in Balochistan and a Brigade in operational areas of the province.

The new Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, has memorized the Holy Quran from the Central Madrasah Darul-Tajweed Hafiz Al-Qur’an, DAV College Road, Rawalpindi. His father Grami was also a Hafiz of the Quran and his brother has also memorized the Holy Quran.
His father was the principal of Tariqabad School in Rawalpindi Cantonment and he has earned a great name in terms of knowledge and literature. His son General Asim Munir is also following in his father’s footsteps.
General Asim Munir is also a disciple of Pakistan’s famous.s preacher late Hafiz Qari Khalil Ahmad. General Asim Munir and his family members have memorized the Holy Quran from Central Madrasa Darul-Tajweed Hafiz Al-Qur’an DAV College Road Rawalpindi.

Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza
New Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza was second in the seniority list for the appointment of four-star generals. He joined Pakistan Army after completing his training from PMA, he started his military career with the 8 Sindh Regiment.
- Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza has been the Corps Commander Rawalpindi since September 2021.
- He assumed the post of Chief of General Staff in June 2019.
- For a short period, he served as Adjutant General GHQ.
- He was appointed as the Vice Chief of General Staff in October 2018.
