OGRA has sent a summary to the Ministry of Finance, in which recommendations have been made to increase the prices of petroleum products by up to Rs 10.0. In the summary sent by OGRA, it has been proposed to increase the price of petrol by Rs 5.90 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs 10 per litre.
According to media sources, the final approval of the price hike will be given by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The new prices will be implemented after the notification of the Finance Ministry.
However, it is also possible to provide relief to the people by reducing petroleum levy and sales tax.
Federal Minister Hamad Azhar said that PTI Government has brought an industrial package due to which power consumption has increased by 15% and we have also abolished power peak hours.
He said that there is a difference of Rs 1.50 to Rs 2.00 between the purchase and sale price of electricity but the government is increasing the price by Rs 1.39 per unit while it will not apply to those using less than 200 units.
Hamad Azhar said that whether consumers buy electricity or not, we have to pay rent for power plants. The previous governments had implemented expensive power projects but the PTI government will not sign any expensive power contract.
He said that the burden of revolving loans is being borne by the people and the government.
The Federal Minister said that we will now set up a power plant on the open bid of cheap fuel. Under the seasonal power package, electricity will be cheaper by Rs. 5 to 7 per unit.
According to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) sources, the average price of electricity has increased by 52% under the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
NEPRA sources told that before the PTI government, the average price of electricity was Rs 11.72 per unit. During the PTI government, the average price of electricity per unit increased by Rs 6.11 per unit.
PML-N and PPP rejected the increase in electricity prices. PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif termed the increase in electricity as a mini-budget.
He said that it has been proved that the government has deceived the people in the name of budget. If this government runs, the economy will not run.
PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman said that the incompetent government has given nothing to the people except inflation and unemployment. The government has increased the price of electricity by more than 40% in three years.
Senator Sherry Rehman said that the people should remember that the approval to increase the price of petrol is given by the Prime Minister himself.
She said that flour was Rs. 740.0 per 20 kg which is now Rs. 1150.0 per 20 kg, sugar which was Rs. 60 per kg is now Rs. 110 per kg.
